Worcester is home to several major employers. These include Lea & Perrins, Carnaud Metalbox, Worcester Bosch Group, Yamazaki Machinery (UK) Ltd, Southco Limited and Salvesen Food Logistics. The economy in Worcester is now extremely diverse, with tourist related activities and those in the service sector such as retail & distribution all contributing greatly to the City’s economy. . The public sector is currently the largest provider of employment in the City and accounts for 24% of employment. This includes Worcestershire County Council and Worcestershire Health Authority NHS Trust. At the moment it appears that unemployment is continuing to rise in Worcester (Worcester news 13/5/09) although with a work force of approximately 52,000 that means that 20% of all jobs in Worcestershire are to be found in Worcester itself Also on a positive note Worcestershire has one of the lowest levels of unemployment in the UK.
