Selling at a Car Boot Sale

Tips for Selling at Car Boot Sales

If you have never sold at a car boot before there are a few things to consider before you throw all your junk out of the attic and into your car.  Firstly don't expect to make a fortune, people that shop at car boot sales generally want to pick up some bargains for less than £1 so do your homework and a bit of planning before you book your pitch.

Have a good idea what you want to sell your goods for, anything that you think is worth more than £5 is probably better sold through a Free Classified Advert so that you are more likely to get the asking price. You will be surprised at how little people will offer you at a Car Boot even if the item is clearly labelled so unless you know you can haggle with the best of them you should try the Classified route first. Obviously if the item in question still doesn't sell for its asking price with a classified ad then it may well be that you have over valued the item and it should have gone to the car boot in the first place!

There are two trains of thought when it comes to pricing things...On one hand if you price everything religiously before you head for your pitch it means you will feel quite organised when you set up but on the other hand regular car boot shoppers say they can spot the inexperienced traders because of the labelling and can use this to their own advantage!

If you are unsure which method of pricing will suit your style of selling it is a good idea to visit a couple of Car Boots as a shopper and do a bit of detective work. Have a good look around and see which methods people are using and which ones appear to be working, see what sort of layout you would feel comfortable with when it's your turn to sell.

So it's the day of the Sale and your car is packed with all your goodies to sell.  You will need to arrive early to set up as there is nothing worse than people rummaging through your stuff before you have even got it out on display. Make sure you have got a collapsible table or at the very least a ground sheet with you to put your stuff on. You might also want to take a folding chair, an umbrella, sunglasses/suntan lotion, something to eat and drink and a good book as you could be in for a long day! It is also worth considering sharing a pitch with a friend as this will cut your cost down and will also allow you both turns to check out other stalls or go to the toilet without leaving your stall unattended.

Don't forget to take lots of change with you and a load of old carrier bags for your customers. If you start to take a fair bit of money make sure you just keep the float by the stall and any excess money locked safe in your car.
