Apprenticeships in Worcester

Worcester MP Robin Walker Meets Worcester Bosch Apprentices

On a recent visit to local firm, Worcester Bosch, Robin Walker, Worcester's MP and Chris Grayling, the Minister for Employment met with apprentices learning their trade at the local business and heard first hand of the valuable experience and opportunities they had gained.

Robin has been a keen supporter of the government's drive to raise the number of apprenticeships and to make sure they are targeted at the highest quality roles. He welcomed announcements in last week's budget of more support from the Treasury.

This will include an extra £180 million over the next four years to create up to 50,000 more apprenticeships. 40,000 of these places will support progression from the expanded work experience programme, helping more unemployed young people into skilled employment. The Government will also extend support to groups of employers from smaller companies to support more Advanced and Higher Apprenticeship schemes - at levels 3 and 4 - creating a further 10,000 apprenticeships.

Prime Minister, David Cameron has backed the plans to increase apprentice numbers as a key plank of the government's growth strategy, saying

"Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity for people to gain the skills they need for the jobs of the future, equipping the country for our goal to build long-term sustainable growth. That is why despite some difficult decisions on spending; we are boosting the number of Apprenticeships. We think this is absolutely vital not just to help people into work for the short term but to make sure they can have successful long term careers."

Robin Walker said

"It was great to meet apprentices at a local firm who are really enjoying their learning experience and being well prepared for a long term sustainable career in manufacturing. We want more high-skilled manufacturing/industry jobs in Worcester and we certainly want more apprenticeships. That is why I have held a number of meetings with Ministers recently to build support for the proposed expansion of Worcester Bosch and it is why I am delighted by the steady increase in numbers of apprenticeships that this government is prepared to invest in."

"Getting smaller and medium sized companies to engage with the apprenticeship agenda is vitally important and that is why I welcome the recent decision to extend government support to this sector. I want to do everything I can to support apprenticeships in Worcester and I will discuss with our local colleges, businesses and councils, how we can maximise the opportunities for their success."
